Booktique. Beautiful Books and Objects in Kolonaki

Delve into this beautifully curated collection of books and objects in Kolonaki and get wonderfully lost in the world of words

Booktique is one of those magical places that makes one thankful that passionate people are still prepared to brave the harsh winds of modern commerce to share their passion and expertise with lucky readers. While it’s a pleasure to pop in and browse the shelves, the Kolonaki bookshop earns, and rewards, the regular guest’s trust. (The word “customer” feels a bit too transactional for this welcoming environment). Obviously one can arrive with a specific book in mind and if they don’t have it, they will endeavour to find it for you.

You can also use the knowledgeable team as a source of free literary therapy and present them with a current mood, a desired outcome, or previously enjoyed book or genre, and see where they take you. The shop had one of the best collections of English language books in Athens, with modern fiction, factual, and classics all covered impressively well given the space.

Fani, the warm and inviting owner, has also sourced a collection of objects that make the space feel more like a gallery than a shop. In fact, the idea of curation is present throughout the items on offer, as visiting Booktique feels like you’re accessing years of good taste and expertise in a warm and welcoming space. A comfortable, carpeted and picket-fenced section at the end has an excellent selection of kids books and toys but for this grown up reader, the whole place feels like a candy shop for the mind and soul.

Some tips from Fani on getting into Greek literary culture for an English speaker:

Greece, a biography of a Nation by Roderick Beaton

Great Chimera by M.Karagatsis

The Murderess by Alexandros Papadiamantis

A Greek Balad, selected poems by Michalis Ganas
