Dimitris Condos’ posthumuous show, Transformations at CAN Gallery

What: The work of Dimitris Condos (1931-1996) is brought to life once more in the exhibition “Transformations – Clouds – Rain”, on view at CAN Christina Androulidaki Gallery until January 18, 2025. Featuring 15 drawings created in 1961 in Paris, the exhibition highlights one of the most poetic and profound phases of the artist’s career.

In 1958, Condos’ artistic journey took a decisive turn when he moved to Rome. Immersed in a vibrant and dynamic art scene, he found fertile ground to explore and absorb influences from artists such as Alberto Burri, Jackson Pollock, and Antoni Tàpies, among others. Together with fellow Greek artists in Rome—Vlassis Caniaris, Nikos Kessanlis, Yannis Gaitis, and Costas Tsoclis—he co-founded Gruppo Sigma (Sigma Group) to consolidate their efforts and promote their work through exhibitions in Rome and other Italian cities. The group’s activities garnered widespread acclaim in both Italy and Greece.

By 1961, amidst this rich network of influences and collaborations, Dimitris Condos had developed a distinct and mature artistic voice, marking a pivotal moment in his career. Leaving Rome, he relocated to Paris, where other members of Gruppo Sigma had already settled or were soon to arrive.

In a secluded Parisian suburb at the Chatou, Condos immersed himself in studying cloudy skies and rain. This introspective and inspired period gave rise to one of his most significant and dynamic series. Crafted exclusively on paper, these works straddle the line between representation and abstraction. Conceived as complete pieces from the start, they rank among the artist’s most important creations—autonomous artistic expressions rather than preparatory sketches or notes for future projects.

Condos’ artistic practice alternated between bursts of intense creativity and passionate production and periods of silence and deep reflection. This rhythm not only shaped the uniqueness of his work but also added to its value, driven by the rarity of both his materials and the limited number of creations.

Condos’ artistic journey was marked by frequent deconstruction and destruction of his work, driving the continuous evolution of his art. The “Transformations” series captures these internal explorations, unveiling his personal vision. Created in late 1961, these works are infused with passion and an unwavering pursuit of perfection. At their heart lies nature, reflecting the artist’s emotions and thoughts like a mirror.
