EMST Presents Penny Siopis’ First Major European Retrospective
What: EMST opens the new year with a landmark exhibition, For Dear Life. A Retrospective, the first major museum retrospective in Europe dedicated to Penny Siopis—one of the most influential artists of her generation. Part of the thought-provoking series What If Women Ruled the World?, the exhibition charts Siopis’ extraordinary career and her lasting impact on contemporary art.
Born in 1953 to Greek parents in South Africa, Siopis emerged in the 1980s and 90s with bold critiques of colonialism, apartheid, and gender politics. Her evocative works delve into memory, truth, and the interplay between personal and collective histories, evolving over decades to include immersive installations and experimental films. By weaving together found footage and personal archives, her films offer a haunting meditation on socio-political change in South Africa and beyond.
Curated by EMST artistic director Katerina Gregos, this retrospective not only celebrates Siopis’ remarkable 50-year career but also sheds light on her enduring exploration of the politics of the body, grief, and shame. A must-see for art lovers and those drawn to the power of storytelling through visual media.
