You’re Invited: Happy Hour for Democrats Abroad Greece

The Athens Chapter of Democrats Abroad Greece serves the American community to make sure their voices are heard back in the States. It brings together trans-Atlantic travelers, students, long-settled Greek Americans, and digital nomads who care about US democracy and each other.

On Wednesday, March 22, connect with new friends and allies in Athens at the Dems Abroad Happy Hour, from 6-9pm at Plakaki Café in Filomousou Eterias Square (Plaka). Help us cut a 50th Birthday Cake for the Equal Rights Amendment!

This March, as part of Women’s History Month, Dems Abroad Greece is celebrating the 100 year fight for women’s equality and the ERA – the US Constitutional Amendment for women’s rights that has been ratified by the states but not put into force. In 1972, the US Congress passed the Equal Rights Amendment, and on March 22 sent it to the states to be ratified. The movement stalled in the late 1970’s amid a backlash against “women’s liberation,” and for decades the amendment was 3 states short of the 38 needed for ratification. After 2010, several states began initiatives to ratify the ERA. Nevada ratified in 2017, Illinois ratified in 2018, and Virginia ratified in 2020. The constitutional requirements were met, but the Trump administration stopped the U.S. Archivist from publishing it. Today, the 28th amendment remains in legal limbo.
