Henry Moore at the Gagosian
The Gagosian Athens, in partnership with the Henry Moore Foundation, presents a rare opportunity to trace this British sculptor’s evolution, from his early experiments in stone and wood to the monumental sculptures that established his legacy.Moore’s work—marked by its fascination with the human form, natural shapes, and elements like rocks and bones—gains new context within Greece, a place that profoundly influenced his artistic vision.
Henry Moore famously exclaimed, “The Acropolis is wonderful—more marvellous than ever I imagined… it’s the greatest thrill I’ve ever had,” a sentiment that speaks to his lifelong admiration for ancient Greek art. Now, the exhibition, spanning the entirety of Moore’s career, showcases his progression towards large-scale, fluid forms that redefine classical ideas of movement and space. Here, Moore’s distinctly modernist style finds a poetic resonance as it is displayed in juxtaposition with the culture that inspired him.
