Ingmar Bergman: The Poet with the Camera

WHAT: Re-visit the most important works of Ingmar Bergman –the great “poet with the camera” – as part of global celebrations for the 100th anniversary of his birth in 1918. The Swedish Institute in collaboration with the Swedish Film Institute, the Embassy of Sweden in Athens and the cinemas Astor and Andora, will host digitally-restored screenings of films such as Summer with Monica (1953); The Seventh Seal (1957); Wild Strawberries (1957); and Fanny and Alexander (1982).

Before the screenings, rare archive material will be displayed for the first time with the director himself preaching about his creations. Bergman – recognised as one of the greatest directors of all time – sought to record and highlight the mystery, ecstasy and wholeness of existence through thumbnails of everyday life, focusing on obsessive therefore the lens of personal relationships.

Through his work, which often dealt with death, illness, faith, betrayal, bleakness and insanity, Ingmar Bergman reformulated the great questions about the human condition, changing forever the way we see cinema.

As part of the tribute, there will be a number of discussions taking place with guests from Greece and abroad. General Admission: € 5.50, Daily Ticket: €10. Entrance to discussions is free.

The screenings will be in Swedish with Greek sub-titles.

WHEN: April 19-22.
