Photography of Antique Machinery at NEMA

What: Jacques Leleu and Nikos Koutsopoulos documented people working on antique machinery, gathering valuable visual material for one of the oldest artisanal and commercial enterprises in Greece, NEMA. An insight into the passementerie tradition and Greece’s industrial history.

Frequent visitors to the Benaki Museum / Mentis – Antonopoulos (‘NEMA’) Passementerie, a centre for learning and for the preservation of traditional crafts, the two photographers documented in photography and video the multiple stages of silk processing and the manufacture of textile artifacts by hand. Through their photographic lens, they captured the antique machinery and the daily work of people, gathering valuable visual material for one of the oldest artisanal and commercial enterprises in Greece. A small representative selection from their work is exhibited together with the workshop’s products at the venue of ‘NEMA’.
